The Role

This is a permanent full-time position commencing in January 2017.

The Head Tennis Coach, is responsible for assisting the Director of Tennis, in the delivery of the Somerville House Tennis program.

The position reports directly to the Director of Tennis, and the Director of Sport, and Director of Co-Curriculum thereafter.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting the Director of Tennis with the leadership, development and management of the Tennis program including the private Tennis lesson program
  • Encouraging participation, creating good spirit, and cultivating a cohesive, enthusiastic team of players in all age groups
  • Assisting in identifying students for nomination at district and regional sporting competitions
  • Working collaboratively with coaches and parents, ensuring relevant student records are maintained and regular communication to parents occurs in relation to Tennis
  • Supporting the Director of Tennis in the management and development of coaches
  • Assisting co-ordinators and coaches in improving their professional skills by encouraging them to participate in courses and skill development programs
  • Running trials and clinics as required
  • Working alongside the Director of Tennis, in actively promoting and expanding the Tennis program, including Adult classes and a Pro Shop
  • Mentoring other coaches ensuring Somerville House students are learning essential skills, and coaching is appropriate at training sessions and matches
  • Maintaining and enhancing the Tennis Coaches Handbook
  • Any other duties as directed by the Director of Tennis, and/or the Director of Sport.

Essential Skills and Attributes

  • Relevant coaching qualifications, and proven experience in a senior coaching role
  • Demonstrated record of ability to increase program participation
  • Experienced coach of children and young adults at varied skill levels, displaying a love of tennis and a desire to work with, and mentor young people
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), with demonstrated ability to build rapport and interact effectively with students, parents and all stakeholders
  • Professional and positive approach whilst maintaining a high level of confidentiality, and observing professional boundaries
  • Strong personal commitment to excellent customer service
  • High level of organisational and time management skills
  • Punctual, reliable and flexible, with a demonstrated personal drive and initiative
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and learning
  • Basic level skills in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, Excel and other associated programs
  • Abiliy to work independently, as well as a capacity to manage people and build teams and be part of the Team
  • High attention to detail
  • Working with Children ‘Positive Notice’ from Blue Card Services, or eligible to apply for a Blue Card upon appointment
  • Current First Aid Qualifications
  • Capacity to support and contribute to the Christian ethos of the School.
